How to Install Cabinet Crown: Miter It, Don't Cope It
Cabinet crown is cut at 45s and mitered at every corner, then glued and pinned. It's not coped like wall crown, because it rides on the cabinet boxes instead of the wall.
Cabinet crown is cut at 45 degrees and mitered at every corner, inside and outside, then glued and pinned so the joints stay closed. That is the piece people get wrong: they cope it the way you cope wall crown. You cope wall crown because it follows drywall corners that are rarely square and framing that moves with the seasons. Cabinet crown rides on the boxes, not on a wall, and the boxes are already set plumb, level, and square to each other, so a tight 45 lands right and holds.
Why is cabinet crown mitered instead of coped?
A coped joint exists to solve a moving, out-of-square wall. One piece runs into the corner and the mating piece is cut to nest over its face, so the joint closes tight even when the corner is off a couple of degrees and stays closed through a Tennessee humidity swing. Cabinet boxes don't hand you that problem. A cabinet run is set to a level line off the floor's high point, shimmed plumb, and screwed together into square corners, so the crown is landing on a true 90 nearly every time. On top of that, cabinet crown is a small, glued-together cornice that sits on the boxes as one rigid piece, so a mitered inside corner has no reason to open the way it would up on a wall. How do you prep the top of the cabinets for the crown?
Crown springs off the top of the upper cabinets at an angle, so it needs something solid to fasten to at the right projection. We run a nailer, or a build-up, around the top of the cabinet run: a strip fastened to the tops of the boxes, set out to the projection the profile needs, giving the crown a continuous surface to catch instead of thin air behind the face frame. Where the cabinets die into the ceiling, the crown fills the gap up to the ceiling; where they stop short, it caps the run on its own. Either way we lay it out to the level line the cabinets are already set to. The box tops are level, so the top of the crown reads level across the whole run, and any small waver in the ceiling gets carried in the caulk line at the very top, which is the finisher's work, not ours.
How do you cut and glue the corners?
Every corner gets cut at 45 degrees. Outside corners get two 45s that wrap the corner, glued on the mating faces and pinned from both directions so the return locks as the glue sets. Inside corners get 45s too, cut to meet in the corner, glued and pinned the same way. We glue the returns because there's rarely framing behind a cabinet cornice to nail into, so the joint itself has to be the strength, not the fasteners. A dry-fit miter walks apart; a glued and pinned one holds as one piece. Pin into the nailer and the face frame where you can, keep the reveal off the top of the boxes consistent down the run, and knock down any proud edge at the miter with a light sand so the two faces read as one. We don't fill the pin holes or paint over them. That's the finisher's trade, and we leave the crown clean and tight for them.
How do you finish dead ends and end returns?
A cabinet run doesn't always end at a corner. Sometimes it dies into a wall, and sometimes it stops at an open end where the box just ends and you can see the side. Where the crown runs into a wall, it dead-ends into it clean, scribed to the wall if the wall isn't straight. Where the run ends in open air, you cut a finished end return: a short 45 that turns the profile back to the cabinet and closes it off, glued on so the raw cut never shows. It's a small cut and it's the one people skip, leaving a bare profile hanging off the end of the run. On a set in a Farragut or West Knox custom kitchen, that returned end sits right at eye level over an island or a tall pantry cabinet, and a missing return is the first thing a picky homeowner catches. We cut the return every time.
