How to Cope an Inside Corner (and Why It Beats a Miter)

Coping means back-cutting one piece of trim to match the profile of the other so an inside corner stays tight when the wood moves. Here is why pros cope instead of mitering, and how to do it.

Coping an inside corner means cutting the first piece of trim square into the corner, then back-cutting the end of the second piece so it matches the exact profile of the first and laps over its face. Finish carpenters cope inside corners instead of mitering them because a coped joint stays tight when the house moves, and an inside miter does not. Two 45-degree cuts meeting on the inside of a corner open into a visible gap the first time the wood swells or shrinks, and in East Tennessee that first real humidity swing usually shows up by spring.

Why do finish carpenters cope inside corners instead of mitering them?

An inside miter is two boards, each cut at 45 degrees, meeting face to face on the inside of the corner. It looks clean the day you cut it. The trouble is that inside corners are almost never a true 90 degrees, and wood keeps moving after it is installed. When the two pieces shift even a little, a mitered joint pulls apart along its whole length and leaves a dark line running out of the corner. A cope works differently. The first piece runs straight through to the wall, and the second piece laps over the face of it, so when things move the overlap takes up the slack and the front of the joint stays closed.

East Tennessee makes this obvious. Summers here are humid and a heated house runs dry in the winter, so trim picks up moisture and gives it back every year, swelling and shrinking as it goes. A mitered inside corner that looked perfect in the fall will often show a gap by spring. A coped corner rides that movement without opening. How do you cope an inside corner, step by step?

A cope is a joint where the end of one board is cut away to match the visible profile of the piece it butts into, so only the front edge makes contact. The steps below work the same for baseboard and for wall crown. Crown just adds the spring angle to the setup, which our full crown molding walkthrough covers. Practice on a scrap first. The first cope is slow and the tenth is quick.

  • Run the first piece straight into the corner. Cut it square and fit it tight so it butts into the corner. This piece never gets coped, and everything else keys off it.
  • Cut a 45 to expose the profile. Cut the second piece as if you were making an inside miter. That miter cut leaves a crisp line where the face profile meets the cut, and that line is the guide you follow.
  • Follow the line with a coping saw. Trace along the exposed profile with a coping saw, cutting away everything behind the line. Go slow on the tight curves, and use a fresh fine-tooth blade so it tracks clean.
  • Back-bevel as you go. Angle the saw so you take more off the back than the front. This back-cut leaves only the front edge to touch and relieves everything behind it, so nothing holds the joint open.
  • Fine-tune from the back. Clean up the cut with a rasp, a round file, or a rotary tool, still working the back side. Sneak up on the fit. The curves and inside points are where a cope reads tight or sloppy.
  • Test-fit before you nail. Hold the coped end against a scrap of the same profile and check the seam. Keep relieving the back until the front edge seats with no gap, then fit it to the installed piece and nail it off into framing.

Do you cope cabinet crown too?

No. This is for wall and trim crown, the crown that runs along the top of a room. Crown that caps cabinets is cut at 45 degrees and mitered at the corners, then glued and pinned. The difference is what it is fastened to. Wall crown spans framing and drywall that move with the house, so the cope buys you insurance against that movement. Cabinet crown sits on a rigid box and returns over short distances, so a tight glued miter holds fine, and coping it would just be extra work for no gain. Coping a room or two yourself is a real skill worth building. Where it turns into more than a weekend is an older house around Oak Ridge or a custom build out in Farragut where the walls run well out of square, so every corner wants its own careful cope and sometimes a scribe to the wall on top of it. Stain-grade trim raises the stakes too, because there is no paint or caulk to cover a joint that is not dead tight. Long runs, rooms full of corners, and multi-piece built-up crown add up fast.
