How to Install Crown Molding: A Real Coping-Saw Walkthrough

A finish carpenter's honest step-by-step: spring angle, cutting crown on the flat, coping inside corners, mitering and gluing outsides, scarfing runs, and where DIYers get stuck.

Crown molding is one of the most satisfying upgrades you can install yourself, and also one of the fastest to look wrong if you fight it instead of understanding it. The whole game is a handful of concepts: spring angle, coping inside corners so they close tight, mitering outside corners so they wrap clean, and hitting solid framing so the crown stays put. I've hung a lot of crown in East Tennessee homes, and I'll walk you through how I actually do it, not the version that only works in a perfectly square lab. Tools and materials you'll actually need

You don't need a shop full of gear, but a few things separate a clean job from a frustrating one. A compound miter saw is the workhorse. A coping saw with a fresh, fine-tooth blade is non-negotiable for inside corners. And a good stud finder matters more than people think, because crown lives up high where there isn't always framing behind the drywall.

  • Compound miter saw (a 10" or 12" handles most residential crown)
  • Coping saw with fine-tooth blades, plus a round and flat rasp or a rotary tool for cleanup
  • Finish nailer (15- or 16-gauge) and a compressor, or a cordless finish nailer
  • Stud finder, a good level, tape measure, and a sharp pencil
  • Construction adhesive or wood glue for outside miters, plus painter's caulk for the top and bottom edges
  • Wood filler or two-part filler for nail holes, and a scrap block cut to your spring angle

Buy 10 to 15 percent more material than your measured footage. You will make cope mistakes, and you want extra from the same run so the profiles match. Crown itself runs roughly $5 to $12 per linear foot on a professional install depending on size, material, and whether it's paint-grade or stain-grade. Understand spring angle before you cut anything

Crown doesn't lie flat against the wall or the ceiling. It sits at an angle bridging the two, and that angle, the spring angle, is usually 38 or 45 degrees. This is the single fact that trips up more first-timers than anything else, because how you set the crown in the saw depends entirely on it. Check your profile's spring angle before you make a single cut. Most residential crown is 38, but confirm it.

There are two ways to cut crown. The first is nested, or "upside down and backwards": you stand the crown in the saw resting against the fence and table exactly as it sits in the room, but flipped, ceiling-side down. The fence acts as the wall and the table acts as the ceiling. It's fast once it clicks, but only works if your saw's fence is tall enough to hold the crown. The second method is cutting it on the flat, laying the crown flat on the table and dialing in both the miter and bevel angles from a crown chart for your spring angle. On the flat is more forgiving for wide crown and big saws, but you have to trust the chart and label your cuts. Pick one method and stick with it for the whole room so you're not switching mental models mid-wall.

Cope the inside corners, miter the outside ones

Here's the rule that makes crown look professional: inside corners get coped, outside corners get mitered. A coped joint means one piece runs straight into the corner, butted to the wall, and the mating piece is cut to nest over its face profile. Walls are rarely a true 90 degrees, and a coped joint closes tight even when the corner is off, where a double 45 inside miter opens up into an ugly gap the first humid week. To cope, first cut the piece as if you were making an inside miter. That miter cut exposes the profile line. Then take your coping saw and cut along that profile line, backcutting slightly, angling the saw so you're removing material behind the face. Undercutting means only the front edge touches, so the joint snaps tight. Test-fit against a scrap of the mating piece, and keep rasping the back until it seats. A good cope takes patience the first few times and about two minutes once you've got the feel.

Outside corners are the opposite. Those you miter, cutting two matching angles that wrap the corner, and you glue them. Run a bead of wood glue or construction adhesive on the mating faces, bring them together, and pin from both directions with a couple of brads so the joint locks as it dries. A glued outside miter stays closed; a dry one walks apart.

Handle long runs, then fasten into something solid

When a wall is longer than your longest piece of crown, you don't just butt two square ends together, because that seam telegraphs and opens. You scarf the joint: cut both pieces at a matching angle, roughly 45 degrees, so they overlap on a diagonal. Glue the scarf, land it over a stud or blocking so you can nail through both pieces, and the seam nearly disappears. Always plan scarf joints to fall where framing backs them up.

Fastening is where crown gets quietly technical. The bottom edge of the crown catches the wall studs, so you nail the bottom into studs wherever you can find them. The top edge lands on the ceiling side, and here's the catch: there isn't always framing at the top plate directly behind the crown, especially on walls running parallel to the ceiling joists. Pros install blocking, a beveled backer strip cut to the spring angle and screwed up in the corner, so the top edge has something real to grab. Without it, the top nails just punch into drywall and the crown eventually sags. If you can't add blocking, angle your top nails up into the top plate where it exists and rely on your bottom nailing plus caulk to carry the rest. Set the crown to the ceiling line, not the wall, since the ceiling is what your eye reads.

Fill, caulk, and where DIYers get stuck

Once it's up, fill every nail hole with wood filler, let it dry, and sand flush. Caulk the top edge where crown meets ceiling and the bottom where it meets the wall, tooling a thin, clean line, because caulk is what hides the small gaps a wavy ceiling leaves behind. Caulk the outside miters too if any hairline shows. Then prime the filler spots and paint. That final fill-and-caulk step is what makes a homeowner install read as built-in rather than bolted-on.

The honest failure points I see most often are these, and none of them are about talent so much as about respecting the details:

  • Cutting the crown at the wrong spring angle, or mixing nested and flat methods mid-room, so profiles don't line up at the corners
  • Double-mitering inside corners instead of coping them, which looks fine on cut day and gaps within weeks
  • Skipping blocking at the ceiling and nailing the top edge into bare drywall, so the crown sags over time
  • Butting long runs with square ends instead of a glued scarf over framing, leaving a seam that opens
  • Trying to force crown to a wavy ceiling with nails instead of scribing and letting caulk carry the last little bit

Crown molding is genuinely doable for a patient DIYer, and a single accent wall or one straightforward room is a great place to earn the skill. Where it stops being a weekend project is when the room fights you: tall ceilings you can't reach safely, rooms full of outside corners, wide multi-piece crown, or old East Tennessee houses where nothing is square and every corner needs its own scribe.
