Signs You Hired a Handyman Instead of a Real Trim Carpenter

Open miters, caulk used as filler, wavy reveals, trim that flexes when you push it — the tells that separate a handyman's trim job from a finish carpenter's. Here's what to look for.

Trim is one of the last things that goes in a house, and it's the thing you look at every day for the next twenty years. When it's done right, you stop seeing it — the room just feels finished. When it's done wrong, you can't stop seeing it, even if you can't name what's bothering you. Most homeowners can't tell good trim from bad until it's caulked and painted, and by then the mistakes are baked in. So here are the tells I'd look for if I were paying someone to trim my own house. None of these require a tape measure or a trade background. You just have to know where to point your eyes.

Look at the inside corners — were they coped or just mitered?

This is the single biggest tell. On an inside corner — think crown molding meeting in the corner of a room, or baseboard turning into a wall — a real finish carpenter copes the joint. That means one piece runs straight into the corner, and the second piece gets its profile cut back at an angle so it sits over the face of the first, following its shape. A handyman miters both pieces at 45 degrees and jams them together. The problem is that no wall corner in an existing house is a perfect 90, and wood moves with the seasons. A mitered inside corner opens up into a gap the first dry winter. A coped joint stays tight because it's mechanically nested, not just butted.

You don't need to know the word to spot it. Crouch down and look hard at an inside corner a year after the work was done. If there's a hairline crack or a wedge of caulk that keeps splitting, it was mitered. Outside corners are a different animal — those are mitered, and a good one has two faces meeting in a crisp line with no overlap and no gap. If your outside corners look chewed or filled, that's its own problem.

How much caulk is doing structural work?

Caulk belongs in exactly two places: the thin seam where trim meets the wall, and the tiny hairline where two well-cut pieces come together. That's it. It's there to hide the transition and take paint, not to build the joint. When you see caulk troweled into a gap you could lose a nickel in, or smeared across a corner to fake a miter that never actually closed, that's a handyman using a tube to cover for a saw he couldn't dial in. The tell shows up later: caulk shrinks and cracks, so those over-filled joints telegraph a dark line within a season or two. Good joints are cut tight in the first place and barely need anything.

  • Caulk lines wider than a pencil mark, especially at corners and joints
  • Nail holes filled but never sanded, so they sit proud under the paint
  • Caulk cracking or pulling away within the first year — a sign the joint moved because it was never tight
  • Beads of construction adhesive squeezing out from behind the trim

Are the reveals straight, and do the lines carry across the room?

A reveal is the little consistent step you leave when one piece of trim sits back from the edge of another — the sliver of door jamb you can see past the casing, for example. A finish carpenter sets a reveal and holds it dead-consistent all the way around an opening. When you stand back from a doorway and the casing reveal is fat on one side and pinched on the other, that's sloppy layout. Same with any long horizontal run: a chair rail or the top of your baseboard should read as one straight line across the whole wall. If it dips and waves, either it wasn't leveled or it was fastened wherever was convenient instead of where it should go.

The same logic decides board-and-batten and paneling. Battens are set plumb — truly vertical — and the top cap or rail is set level. A room isn't square and floors aren't flat, so a handyman who just follows the floor or the ceiling ends up with battens that lean and a cap that sags. Push on the trim. Does it flex?

Trim has to fasten to something solid. Casing and baseboard get nailed into the framing and jambs behind the drywall — the studs, the plates, the blocking. When you press on a properly fastened baseboard, it doesn't move. A handyman who pins trim into nothing but hollow drywall gets a board that flexes when you lean on it and pops loose over time, especially where a vacuum or a chair leg keeps hitting it. It's worth noting the honest exception: lightweight applied-molding boxes and some picture-frame panel work are legitimately glued and pin-nailed to the drywall face, because they carry no real load. The difference is knowing which is which. A pro knows when a fastener needs framing and when adhesive is the right call. A handyman glues everything because it's faster.

One more, while your hand's on it: run a finger along a long wall of trim and find the seams. Long runs get scarfed — the two boards are joined on a matching angled cut, not butted square end-to-end. A scarf joint hides the seam and won't gap into an ugly dark line when the wood shrinks. A square butt joint on a long baseboard run is a shortcut you'll be looking at forever.

It's about the difference between someone who hangs trim occasionally and someone who does finish work for a living and has the layout habits, the coping skills, and the patience to cut a joint tight instead of caulking over a loose one.
