How to Install Shiplap: Nailing, Gapping, and Fitting Around Outlets
A finish carpenter's step-by-step guide to installing shiplap: finding studs, setting a dead-level starting course, holding a consistent nickel gap, and cutting clean around outlets.
Shiplap is one of the most DIY-friendly wall treatments out there, and it's also one of the easiest to botch in ways that scream amateur the second the light hits it. The material forgives a lot, but three things it will not forgive are a starting course that isn't dead level, a gap that wanders wider and narrower as you climb the wall, and a hack job around outlets. Get those three right and a homeowner can hang a wall that reads as professional. This is the method I use in the field, with the reasons behind each step so you understand why, not just what. Tools and materials you'll actually need
You don't need a shop full of gear for this, but a few tools are non-negotiable. The single most important one is a 4-foot level or a laser level. Everything on the wall is referenced off that first board, so if you cheap out anywhere, don't cheap out here.
- Brad or finish nailer (18-gauge, 2" brads) plus a compressor, or a cordless equivalent
- 4-foot level and/or a self-leveling laser level
- Stud finder — and a nail or awl to confirm the edge of the stud by feel
- Miter saw for square cross-cuts and outside miters; a jigsaw or oscillating multi-tool for outlet cutouts
- The spacer you'll use for the gap: many people use actual nickels; I prefer a stack of same-thickness plastic spacers or a scrap ripped to the gap width so every joint is identical
- Tape, pencil, caulk, wood filler, and construction adhesive for boards that don't land on framing
- Box extenders (the plastic collars that bring an electrical box flush to your new surface) — buy these before you start
Find your studs and set a dead-level starting course
Run your stud finder across the whole wall and mark stud centers with a light vertical pencil line from floor to ceiling. On standard framing you're looking at 16 inches on center, but confirm it — older Knoxville homes and remodels wander. You want those lines because your nails need to hit solid wood wherever the board carries any real load, and because you'll be cutting outlet holes relative to boxes that are screwed to those same studs.
Here's the step everyone rushes: your first course sets the fate of the entire wall, and the floor is almost never level. Do not measure up from the floor and trust it. Pull a level line across the wall with your 4-foot level or snap it with a laser, then set your bottom board to that line, not to the floor. If the floor slopes, you'll leave a slightly tapered gap at the very bottom that baseboard covers later. Chase the floor with your shiplap instead and every course above it will run out of level, and by the time you reach the ceiling the error is glaring. Level the first board, then check level again on the second before you commit to the pattern.
Nailing pattern and holding a consistent gap
Shiplap has a rabbeted edge — each board overlaps the next — so the boards physically register to one another, but the reveal (the visible shadow line between boards) is up to you. This is where a spacer earns its keep. Set your board, drop your spacers on top of the course below at each end and one in the middle, push the new board down onto them, then nail. Pull the spacers, move up, repeat. A nickel gives you a clean, consistent nickel gap; a ripped scrap or plastic spacer does the same thing more repeatably. The mistake is eyeballing it — do that and the gap breathes wider and tighter across the wall and the whole thing looks off even if nobody can say why.
For the nailing itself: put two nails at every stud — one near the top edge and one near the bottom of each board — so each board is fastened to framing top and bottom. Angle nails slightly and keep them where the next course or where caulk/filler will hide the hole. Two rules save you grief: shoot into studs wherever the board carries load, and when a board's end or a seam lands between studs, back it with a bead of construction adhesive so it isn't relying on a brad in bare drywall. On long walls you'll need to join boards end to end — land those butt joints on a stud, stagger them course to course so they don't stack into a visible vertical line, and cut the mating ends square so the seam is tight before you fill it.
Cutting around outlets and switches (the part people fear)
This is genuinely the fussiest part, and it's mostly measuring. First, the safety and code piece: when you add a layer of shiplap over the wall, the electrical box is now recessed behind your new surface. Code wants the box brought flush, so install a box extender before you re-attach the outlet — don't just pull the receptacle forward on longer screws and hope. Kill the breaker, pull the cover plate and the device, and you'll set the board over the opening.
To transfer the cutout accurately: measure from a known reference — the edge of the last board and a fixed vertical line — to all four sides of the box, then mark that rectangle on the back of your shiplap board (remember to flip your measurements left-to-right since you're marking the back). A trick that removes the guesswork is to rub chalk or lipstick on the box edges, hold the board tight in position, and press — it stamps the exact outline onto the board. Cut just outside your line with a jigsaw or an oscillating tool; a hair loose is fine because the cover plate laps over the edges. Cut it too tight and you'll be sanding and swearing; cut it grossly oversized and the plate won't cover it. When the wall's done, reinstall the device on the extender, and the plate sits proud on the new surface like it was always there.
Corners, ceilings, and clean terminations
Corners are where DIY walls fall apart. At an inside corner, run the boards on one wall tight into the corner and butt the adjoining wall's boards against them, then caulk the joint — walls are rarely a true 90, so a thin caulk line reads far cleaner than fighting a gappy cut. At an outside corner you have two honest options: miter the two boards together for a wrapped, seamless look, or — simpler and very forgiving — butt them and cover the joint with a piece of corner trim or a square outside-corner molding. Beginners should not be afraid to trim a corner; it's what pros do when the framing isn't perfect, which is always.
For terminations, decide the top and bottom before you start. At the bottom, baseboard covers the last course and any floor taper. At the ceiling, either scribe the top board to the ceiling if it waves, or plan to run crown or a simple flat cap molding to hide the transition — that's cleaner than a raw, wavy gap against the ceiling. Around windows and doors, the shiplap dies into the casing; hold a consistent reveal and caulk the seam. Walls run out of square more than anyone expects, so scribe — trace the wall's actual contour onto your board and cut to it — wherever a shiplap edge meets an adjoining surface that isn't straight. Finish the wall by filling nail holes, caulking the seams you want tight, and painting.
Where DIYers get stuck
After enough of these walls, the failure points are predictable. Almost every one traces back to the first board or the gap:
- Chasing the floor instead of pulling a level line — the wall runs out of level and you don't notice until the ceiling course is visibly tapered
- An eyeballed gap that drifts — the single biggest tell of an amateur wall; use a spacer at every joint, every time
- Butt joints that aren't on a stud, aren't staggered, or aren't cut square — you get a floppy seam and an ugly vertical stack of joints
- Skipping box extenders — a code and safety miss, and the outlet ends up buried behind the surface
- Forcing corners and terminations to be perfect cuts instead of caulking, mitering, or trimming them — fighting out-of-square framing you can't win against
- Nailing into drywall between studs with no adhesive, so boards bow or pop loose later
Here's the honest read: a single flat accent wall with few obstructions is a very doable weekend project, and if you take your time on the level line and the gap, you'll be proud of it. Where it stops being a fun Saturday is a room full of angles — walls with lots of windows and doors, a wall going up to a vaulted or sloped ceiling that needs everything scribed, a two-story stairwell run, or ceilings and beams where a wandering gap telegraphs from across the room. Those jobs are more layout and scribe work than nailing, and that's where a finish carpenter earns the fee.
