Coped, mitered, glued, and scribed

Inside corners get coped. A back-cut cope tucks tight and stays tight when the framing moves through a humid summer off the lake, where a 45 on 45 opens a hairline gap by spring. Outside corners get mitered and glued so the return reads as one continuous piece. Long walls, common in these open lake floor plans, get a scarf joint cut on a bevel and landed over a stud, so a run of crown never shows a butt seam. And because almost no wall in a real house is dead straight or plumb — least of all in a two-hundred-year-old part of town — we scribe to what's actually there: base scribed down to an out-of-level floor, casing held off drywall that bows at the corner bead. It runs slower than nailing and caulking, and most crews skip it.

Matching trim in the historic district

A remodel downtown looks wrong the moment the trim doesn't match. An old Dandridge house carries a specific casing and crown profile, a door proportion, and a reveal that sets the tone for the whole room, and a modern profile dropped in next to it reads new immediately. We identify the existing profile, profile-match the stock, and blend new runs into old so the transition reads as original. Reveals get set off the actual opening rather than a nominal number, and we scribe the new work to the settled walls and floors an old house hands you.
