A designer's guide to speccing trim and millwork that installs cleanly
A design that looks right on the elevation can fight the wall when it hits the miter saw. Here's how to spec reveals, returns, and grade so the install crew executes your intent instead of guessing at it — from the carpenter doing the installing.
A trim spec is a set of instructions the install crew reads at the saw, not just a look on the elevation. When a package installs poorly, it's usually not because the carpenter got it wrong — it's because the drawing left a decision to the field that should have been made at the desk. The fixes below are the handful of things I wish more designers put on the sheet. Get these right and the crew executes your intent instead of guessing at it; leave them off and you inherit whatever the saw decides that day.
Call out the reveal, not just the profile
A profile number tells me the shape of the stick. It doesn't tell me the reveal — the sliver of jamb or stile you leave showing before the casing starts, usually a consistent 3/16" or 1/4" all the way around a door. That reveal is what makes casing read intentional instead of jammed against the frame, and it's the number that has to stay identical on every opening in a room for the eye to relax.
If you don't spec it, every carpenter picks their own, and now your doors don't match your windows. Put a target reveal on the trim sheet the same way you'd put a grout line on a tile drawing. The same goes for stack heights where base meets casing, and for how proud a backband stands off the wall — small dimensions that are invisible until they're inconsistent.
Draw the returns and terminations
The prettiest part of a trim package is usually where it stops. A chair rail that dies into a door casing, an apron under a stool, a piece of picture-frame moulding that has to close a corner — those are the details that separate custom from builder-grade, and they're the ones most often left blank on a drawing. When it's blank, the field makes the call, and you may not love the call.
- Show how a run terminates. Does the chair rail return to the wall with a little mitered return, die into casing, or wrap the corner? Each is a different look. Pick one on the drawing.
- Remember inside vs. outside corners. Inside corners on profiled moulding get coped, outside corners get mitered — that's just correct practice, but knowing it helps you draw corners that a crew can actually execute cleanly.
- Flag long walls. On a run longer than a stick of material, the joint gets scarfed on an angle, not butted. Tell me where you'd rather that joint land so it isn't in the middle of the money wall.
Spec for walls that are never square
Here's the reality every drawing quietly assumes away: walls are rarely plumb, ceilings rarely level, and corners rarely a true 90. A tall panel layout drawn to perfect dimensions will show a tapered gap somewhere, because the room tapers. That's not a defect — it's a house. A good spec leaves the crew room to absorb it. On wainscoting and paneling, that means the design carries a cap or a rail wide enough to scribe to the ceiling and a base tall enough to scribe to the floor, so the out-of-square disappears into a shadow line instead of a visible wedge.
It also means naming what's structural. In board-and-batten, the battens run plumb and the top cap runs level — and where those two truths meet a crooked room, one of them has to win visually. Decide which. Same with applied-moulding boxes on a wall: those are usually adhered and pinned to the drywall, so their layout can float to look even, while trim that carries load fastens to framing or blocking and can't. Decide paint-grade vs. stain-grade on paper
This is the single decision that changes how a package is built, not just how it looks. Paint-grade forgives — joints get caulked, filled, and painted, so a scarf or a slightly open miter disappears. Stain-grade hides nothing — the grain is the point, so joints have to be tight in the wood, material has to be sorted for color, and there's no caulk to bail you out. They are different labor and different material, and a spec that says only "crown here" without saying which one leaves the biggest driver of the bid undefined. Mock it up before you commit the whole house
For anything that repeats across a floor — a casing package, a paneled wall, a coffered layout — one built sample on site is worth ten more lines of notes. A mockup catches the reveal that reads too tight, the profile that's heavier than the render suggested, and the corner detail that doesn't want to close, while it's still one wall and not twenty.
