Custom built-ins: the install process, start to finish
A finish carpenter's walk through the real install sequence for a built-in — from templating the opening and scribing to out-of-square walls, to leveling and fastening the boxes, trimming out, and dialing in the doors and drawers.
A built-in looks like one clean piece when it's done, but on install day it shows up as a stack of boxes, some face-frame parts, a bundle of moulding, and a pile of scribe stock. What turns that into something that looks like it grew out of the wall is the sequence — the order you do things in, and how honestly you deal with a house that is never as square, plumb, or level as the drawing says it is. Here's how a custom built-in goes in, start to finish, whether we're setting a shop-built unit or assembling purchased components on site.
Step one: template and measure the real opening
Before a single box gets carried in, we template the opening it's going into. That means measuring the width at the top, middle, and bottom, and the height on both sides — because those numbers almost never match. We check the walls for plumb, the floor for level, and the back wall for bow, and we hunt for the high point of the floor with a level or a laser, because that high point is what the whole unit gets set to. We also find the framing: where the studs land, whether there's blocking behind the drywall, and where any wiring or outlets sit that need to come through the back.
This is also when a plan gets pressure-tested against reality. A drawing calls for a 96-inch run; the actual alcove measures 95 and a quarter at the bottom and 95 and three-quarters at the top. Nobody designed it wrong — the house just moved. Catching that now, on paper, is a lot cheaper than catching it with a saw. Scribing to walls that aren't straight
Here's the part that separates a built-in from a bookshelf shoved against a wall: the piece has to die cleanly into surfaces that are out of square. You don't fight that by forcing the cabinet — you scribe to it. A scribe filler or an oversized end panel gets held in place, a compass or scribe tool rides the wall while a pencil marks the panel, and then that line gets cut and sanded back so the panel follows every hump and hollow in the plaster. Done right, the gap between the built-in and the wall disappears.
- Side scribes — where an end panel meets a wall, so the vertical line reads tight top to bottom even if the wall leans.
- Floor scribes — the toe kick or base gets scribed to follow a floor that dips, so there's no daylight under the cabinet.
- Ceiling and crown scribes — where the top of the unit or its crown meets a ceiling that waves, the scribe moulding takes up the difference instead of leaving a shadow line.
Setting and fastening the boxes
With the opening understood, the carcasses go in — and everything references that floor high point we shot earlier. The first box gets shimmed until it's dead level and plumb, front to back and side to side, and it's leveled to the high point so no cabinet in the run ends up sitting below the floor. Every box after it gets set to that same plane and clamped to its neighbor, face frames flush, before anything gets screwed home. On a long run we'll scarf and join face frames so the seams don't telegraph, and reveals get checked across the whole face before it's committed.
Then it gets fastened to the house, not just to itself. Screws go through the back rails into studs or into the blocking we located during templating — into framing that actually carries the load — because a built-in full of books or dishes is heavy, and it has to be tied to structure, not to drywall. Toe kicks get shimmed and fastened to the floor, tall units get anchored back to the wall up high, and only after the whole run is locked in and still reading level do the shims get trimmed and the extra screws set.
Trimming out: where it stops looking like furniture and starts looking built
The trim is what marries the cabinetry to the room. Base moulding wraps the bottom and ties into the room's existing baseboard so the built-in reads like it was always there. Crown or a built-up cornice caps the top and closes the gap to the ceiling, scribed where the ceiling waves. Filler and scribe strips close the reveals at the walls. All of it follows the same rules as any good trim job: inside corners get coped so they stay tight when the wood moves, outside corners get mitered, long runs get scarfed on an angle so the joint hides, and every piece fastens into solid backing. Filling, sanding, and dialing in the doors and drawers
Once the carpentry is set, the piece gets made paint-ready. Every nail hole gets filled, seams and joints get caulked or filled depending on whether it's paint-grade or stain-grade, and the whole thing gets sanded so the profiles read crisp and the filler disappears under primer. On a stain-grade built-in there's no filler to hide behind, so the joinery has to be right the first time — one more reason the box work and scribing matter as much as they do. The last pass is the doors and drawers. Every door hangs on adjustable hinges that move six ways — in and out, up and down, side to side — so the reveals between doors come out even and the faces sit in one plane. Drawer slides get adjusted so the fronts line up and the gaps match top to bottom. This is slow, fussy work, and it's the part people actually run their eyes across every day. A built-in where the doors are a hair off reads as off even if nobody can say why; one where every reveal is even reads as built by someone who cared.
